last week, i spotted a van literally covered with old film cameras parked in soho. it turns out to be Harrod Blank’s camera van (and it’s more than just decoration).
I bought this canvassed photograph of manhattanhenge from “sort of” an old looking guy selling prints on Lafayette St. near Astor Place. It was past midnight on friday and I was en route to a bar downtown, but for a brief time, we got into talking about manhattanhenges and how much of a spectacle it is to watch. Then he said “this is because new york city was designed to breathe in sunrise and exhale sunset,” while moving his hands upwards and sideways in parallel, like a pound sign (#). I remember finding this remark as profound or somewhere near it. Then we shook hands, he put that photograph in a bag, i paid him, we shook hands again and I never thought to ask his name. I like this painting. The end.
A few days ago, I was walking down Manhattan Ave. and there happened to be an airplane tagging “cloud” repeatedly over the sky. It turns out to be the latest public art project by Ron English, a painter/pop artist best known for his satirical commentaries on corporate advertising. Very nice.
Summer 2009 in Greenpoint shall be remembered for many things—among them, DICKCHICKEN. In the past few months, this remarkably hideous tag has been parading across new york city, particularly in East Village, LES and North Brooklyn. The man (presumably) behind DICKCHICKEN has yet to reveal his identity, but if you’re as curious as i’m, you can check out the upcoming exhibition at 3rd Ward (Oct. 27 - Nov. 1).
