I bought this canvassed photograph of manhattanhenge from “sort of” an old looking guy selling prints on Lafayette St. near Astor Place. It was past midnight on friday and I was en route to a bar downtown, but for a brief time, we got into talking about manhattanhenges and how much of a spectacle it is to watch. Then he said “this is because new york city was designed to breathe in sunrise and exhale sunset,” while moving his hands upwards and sideways in parallel, like a pound sign (#). I remember finding this remark as profound or somewhere near it. Then we shook hands, he put that photograph in a bag, i paid him, we shook hands again and I never thought to ask his name. I like this painting. The end.
